Helen Mirren is set to receive a lifetime achievement award from the European Film Academy when the European Film Awards ceremony takes place in December, in Malta.

In response to the announcement of her European Achievement in World Cinema honour, Mirren said: "It was discovering the immense diversity of European film making that gave me an enduring love and respect for the art form.

"This award is therefore a very meaningful honour. I would be proud to be counted as an actor in the European tradition."

Mirren, who began her film career in the late 1960s, won an Oscar for her portrayal of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.
