Melissa Leo has been cast in Prisoners, it has been announced.

The Oscar-winning actress will team up with Hugh Jackman on the project which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, Alcon Entertainment has confirmed.

Prisoners tells the story of a small town carpenter (Jackman) who takes the law into his own hands when the police are unable to locate his kidnapped daughter, leading him to clash with the detective assigned to the case.

The screenplay has been written by Contraband writer Aaron Guzikowski.

Leo won an Academy Award for her supporting role in The Fighter, and also received an Oscar nomination for her lead role in Frozen River in 2008.

Prisoner is scheduled to begin filming early next year, with an autumn 2013 release targeted.
