2fm's Dave Fanning has said that The X Factor, which recently returned to TV screens, is not about the music.

Writing in this week’s RTÉ Guide, he said "It's a TV show. That's it. The winner is irrelevant and chances are you'll soon enough come across him or her appearing at a yellow and red building near you asking 'do you want fries with that?'"

He adds "I have no idea if this year’s X Factor is any better/crueller/livelier/fairer/excitinger than any other year and if I said I cared, X Factor fans would probably believe me because of course, they believe anything. Don’t they?"

On the news that Simon Cowell will return this year in some guise Dave said it was unclear if he will appear "if it's in person, via Skype, in a malevolently omniscient mist or if, Alien-like, he'll explode from Louis' chest cavity in a shower of gore."

The rest of Dave’s thoughts on the subject can be read in this week’s RTÉ Guide and you can catch his show on 2fm Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm and on Saturdays at 10am.
