Doctor Who exec Steven Moffat has said that a female doctor is a possibility in the future.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Moffat said: "[Attitudes to that idea] have been changing.

"It is a part of Time Lord lore that it can happen - a Time Lord could potentially turn into a woman. The more often it's talked about, the more likely it is to happen someday, I suppose."

In June, actress Lara Pulver (Sherlock, Spooks) dismissed reports suggesting she would play the first female Doctor, claiming that "the fans aren't keen on [the idea]."

Doctor Who will return to BBC One and BBC America on Saturday, September 1.
