Matthew McConaughey has joined the cast of The Wolf of Wall Street.

The Magic Mike star is the latest actor to sign up to director Martin Scorsese's upcoming drama.

McConaughey will play the character of Mark Hanna, the early mentor of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) in the project.

The film follows the rise and decline of stockbroker Jordan Belfort's fortunes on Wall Street and his struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. The script has been adapted by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter from Belfort's memoir.

Scorsese has described The Wolf of Wall Street as a cautionary tale about greed and human nature.

Also cast in the movie are Jon Favreau, Jonah Hill, Jean Dujardin, Rob Reiner, Kyle Chandler, Margot Robbie, Jon Bernthal, Cristin Milioti, P.J. Byrne and Ethan Suplee.

The project is set to begin filming in New York later this month.
