Rihanna showcased a bold new look as she performed on the final of American Idol last night, with a barely-there costume and a head of dark dreadlocks.

The singer performed her new single Where Have You Been, flanked by a group of female dancers in tribal attire. The 24 year-old singer jetted out of London to perform on the live results show of the current season of the reality singing competition. The final was held in Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre.

Judge Jennifer Lopez also performed Follow The Leader on the finale show alongside Wisin and Yandel.

The 42 year-old mother-of-two showcased her slim figure in a two-piece costume. Lopez was recently named the most powerful celebrity in the world by Forbes Magazine.

It was also a look back through time as previous winners Fantasia Barrino and Jordin Sparks returned to the reality show to duet with contestants from the current season.

Reba McEntire, Chaka Khan, Neil Diamond, Creedance Clearwater Revival and Jennifer Holiday also appeared on the show alongside different acts.

Fellow judge Steven Tyler took to the stage as well as Lopez, as his band Aerosmith debuted their first new single in six years, entitled Legendary Child, alongside their hit Walk This Way.

The three American Idol judges crowned their winner last night

The two finalists vying for the crown last night were 16 year-old Jessica Sanchez, who the judges saved from being eliminated mid-way through the competition, and 21 year-old Philip Phillips. Philips emerged victorious and performed his winning single, Home, as the closing song of the season.
