Hugh Grant has become a father for the first time after a "fleeting affair" and is "delighted" about the new arrival.

The 51-year-old actor has had a daughter with the Chinese actress, Tinglan Hong, who is 19 years his junior.

The child, whose name has not been revealed, was born five weeks ago according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Grant is not believed to have been present at the birth but is said to have spent around half an hour with mother and daughter the following day.

Last night his publicist said in a statement: "I can confirm that Hugh Grant is the delighted father of a baby girl.

"He and the mother had a fleeting affair and while this was not planned, Hugh could not be happier or more supportive. He and the mother have discussed everything and are on very friendly terms."

Grant, who is reportedly worth €47 million, has had a number of high profile partners in the past including a 13-year relationship with actress Liz Hurley and most recently socialite Jemima Khan (they split up in 2007).

Grant's next major Hollywood role is opposite Tom Hanks and Halle Berry in a big screen adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel, Cloud Atlas.
