Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 smashed the all-time single-day gross at the US box office yesterday.

With receipts in excess of $92.1 million, the latest HP movie easily eclipsed its nearest rival, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which earned $72.7 million on its opening day Stateside.

Along with its massive commercial success – the movie is well on its way to recording the biggest worldwide opening of all time which was set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at $394 million – the film has also been a critical hit with most reviewers rating the valedictory film the pick of the bunch.

The seven previous films in the franchise have grossed a whopping total of $6.4 billion worldwide, making it the most successful series of all time.

Harry Pottter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 opened in Ireland on Friday.
