After a tumultuous pre-production, filming began today on The Hobbit. The long-awaited prequels to the critical and commercial slam dunk that was The Lord of the Rings trilogy survived a litany of calamitous mishaps and misfortunes including money issues, the loss of director Guillermo del Toro, an industrial dispute and an earthquake.

Now Warner Bros. have released a statement confirming that the greatest movie show on earth will go on with Peter Jackson, the LOTR kingpin, at the helm. Like the Rings trilogy before it, the epic will be shot on location in Jackson’s native New Zealand. The director posted photographs of himself on set – complete with a morning edition of the local newspaper – on a new Facebook page. Yes, The Hobbit is really happening at last.
