Legendary action director John Woo has said he would like to see Liam Neeson star in his upcoming World War II movie 'The Flying Tigers'.

The Hollywood Reporter says the film is based on the true story of a fighter squadron established under the command of Lieutenant General Claire Chennault to help the Chinese fight the Japanese before the US entered World War Two.

Asked who could play Chennault, Woo replied: "It's got to be a star but it's hard to find the right one, because at that time Chennault was almost 50-years-old. Ideally, I've been thinking of Liam Neeson as the title [lead] actor."

'Flying Tigers' is due to begin shooting in the spring.
