The lawyer for R&B star Chris Brown, who is accused of assaulting singer Rihanna, has asked the California Supreme Court to delay the case.

Reuters reports that Mark Geragos is seeking the delay until the California Supreme Court rules on his attempt to get information from the police.

The lawyer wants details of a police investigation into the leaking of a photo of Rihanna following the alleged assault.

A hearing in the case had been scheduled for next Monday.

Brown is accused of assaulting Rihanna "by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury" and threatening to commit a crime "which would result in death and great bodily injury".

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
