Wicklow resident Daniel Day-Lewis has been conferred with the first Freedom of County Wicklow by Wicklow County Council at a ceremony today.

The actor was chosen as the first recipient because "of his Oscar wins, his contribution to cinema and the reflected honour he has brought to County Wicklow".

At today's ceremony, Day-Lewis was presented with a specially commissioned Sun Disc, created by local artist Brian Hackett.

Joining Day-Lewis and his family at the event were film producers Noel Pearson and Morgan O'Sullivan, U2 manager Paul McGuinness and costume designer Joan Bergin.
