A third series of award-winning comedy series 'Gavin and Stacey' will be made, its writers confirmed today.

Ruth Jones and James Corden made the announcement while recording a radio show in front of a live audience in Barry Island, South Wales.

Corden, appearing as a guest on Jones' 'Sunday Brunch' programme for BBC Radio Wales, said he hoped the new series would not disappoint fans of 'Gavin and Stacey'.

The 1,000-strong audience cheered when Corden and Jones, who star in the show as Gavin and Stacey's friends Nessa and Smithy, announced the continuation of the series, BBC Online reported.

The series has attracted a cult following after being first shown on BBC Three.

A special edition of the show, about the relationship between a young woman from Barry and her Essex-based husband, is being broadcast on Christmas Eve.

The sitcom won the South Bank Show comedy award in January, and has been nominated for the prize again this year.
