Work has now begun on the script for the 'Lord of the Rings' prequel 'The Hobbit'.

Entertainment Weekly reports that 'Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson and his writing partners on the trilogy, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are working with 'The Hobbit's director, Guillermo del Toro, on the script.

'The Hobbit' is planned as two films with shooting scheduled to begin at the earliest in New Zealand in the autumn of 2009.

It is planned that the films will be in cinemas for Christmas 2011 and Christmas 2012.

Del Toro's new film, 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army', is currently in cinemas.
