A new award for Irish musicians, the Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year, has been established to celebrate and acknowledge the work of Irish musicians.

The Choice Music Prize aims to highlight albums from a variety of genres - from indie, trad and pop to electronic and jazz - which deserve more attention.

A panel, consisting of 12 Irish media professionals, will then select the album which best sums up the year in Irish music.

The judging panel, chaired by Irish Times journalist Jim Carroll, are currently involved in selecting the Choice Music Prize shortlist, which will be announced in January 2006.

This will consist of ten albums released by Irish acts in 2005.

The Choice Music Prize event will be held in Dublin's Vicar Street on 28 February 2006.
