More details have emerged on Morrissey's new album, his first in seven years.

Billboard reports that 'You are the Quarry' will be released on 17 May with the first single, 'Irish Blood, English Heart', released on 10 May.

In a statement the singer said: "This is a much brighter sounding album than much of my previous work."

"We've turned the page with 'Quarry'. It's a dynamic album and I couldn't be any happier."

The singer has, so far, announced one date in support of the album in Manchester on 22 May.

It is his first live appearance in his home city since 1992 and he will be supported by Irish singer-songwriter Damien Dempsey and Franz Ferdinand.
