Singer and actress Courtney Love has been charged with a drug offence, less than a week after she allegedly tried to break into a Los Angeles home.

Love is due to appear in court over the misdemeanour drug charge on Friday and if convicted she could face a maximum penalty of one year in jail.

Love, 39, was arrested on 2 October outside a Los Angeles home where she had allegedly broken the windows in an attempt to enter.

She was later released on $2,500 bail.

Hours later Love was admitted to a Beverly Hills hospital to receive treatment for a suspected drug overdose.

Founder of the band Hole, Love is the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994.

She received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the 1996 movie 'The People vs Larry Flynt'.
