Author Frank McCourt has donated €150,000 to the University of Limerick for the purchase of the Leonard Collection in memory of his mother.

McCourt, who wrote the best selling memoir 'Angela's Ashes', is a director of the University of Limerick Foundation.

The collection was gathered by local Limerick priest, Father John Leonard, and encompasses literature, history, topography, politics and the social sciences on and about Limerick city and county.

The books, periodicals, paintings, prints and engravings consist of over 4,000 items that were gathered by Fr Leonard over 33 years.

These materials will now be stored in the Special Collections section of the University Library.
