'X-Men 2' grossed over €1m at cinemas in Ireland and Northern Ireland at the weekend, outperforming the original film by almost 50%.

The sequel to 2000's smash hit opened in an unprecedented 93 territories worldwide and became the biggest opening film ever.

In its first 5 days of release, 'X-Men 2' grossed $154,829,584 worldwide.

The film, which stars Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Halle Berry, had its world premiere in London on 24 April.

It has yet to be released in Russia (8 May), Indonesia (14 May), India (30 May), Egypt (11 June) and Israel (19 June).
