'Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring' has made it into the record books with the highest one-day sale figures for its release on DVD in the UK and Ireland.

The first instalment of movies based on the JRR Tolkien books was released on Tuesday and sold 1.27 million copies in its first day on shop shelves in the UK and Ireland alone.

'Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone' sold 1.25 million copies on its first day of release on DVD earlier this year. It had sold 1.6 million by the end of the first week.

With strong sales continuing this week, 'Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' is widely tipped to be the biggest video and DVD release of all time.

The second LOTR instalment, 'The Two Towers', will hit cinema screens worldwide later this year.
