The nominations for the 74th Academy Awards have been announced with 'Lord of the Rings' making the shortlist in thirteen categories.

'Moulin Rouge', 'A Beautiful Mind', 'In the Bedroom' and 'Gosford Park' also receieved numerous nominations. All five films have been nominated in the Best Picture category.

As expected, Russell Crowe has received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in 'A Beautiful Mind' with Nicole Kidman nominated in the Best Actress category for 'Moulin Rouge'.

The other nominees for Best Actor are: Sean Penn for 'I Am Sam', Will Smith for 'Ali', Denzel Washington for 'Training Day' and Tom Wilkinson for 'In the Bedroom'.

The Best Actress shortlist includes Halle Berry for 'Monster's Ball', Judi Dench for 'Iris', Sissy Spacek for 'In the Bedroom' and Renée Zellweger for 'Bridget Jones's Diary'.

The nominations for Best Supporting Actor are: Jim Broadbent for 'Iris', Ethan Hawke for 'Training Day', Ben Kingsley for 'Sexy Beast', Ian McKellen for 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' and Jon Voight for 'Ali'.

Jennifer Connelly ('A Beautiful Mind'), Helen Mirren ('Gosford Park'), Maggie Smith ('Gosford Park'), Marisa Tomei ('In the Bedroom') and Kate Winslet ('Iris') have been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Shortlisted for Best Director are: Ron Howard ('A Beautiful Mind'), Ridley Scott ('Blackhawk Down'), Robert Altman ('Gosford Park'), Peter Jackson ('The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring') and David Lynch ('Mulholland Drive').

'Amelie', 'Gosford Park', 'Memento', 'Monster's Ball' and 'The Royal Tenenbaums' have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

The films nominated for Best Adapted screenplay are: 'Ghost World', 'A Beautiful Mind', 'In the Bedroom', 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' and 'Shrek'.

'Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius', 'Shrek' and 'Monsters, Inc' have been nominated in the Best Animated Feature category.

The awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on March 24.
