Martin Scorsese has hired a second film editor to work on 'Gangs Of New York' in a bid to cut the movie to a workable length.

A rough cut of the gangster epic clocked in at four hours.

The aim is to cut it to a running length of around two hours and 20 minutes in time for its planned US release in December.

A source said, "It's all in hand, Martin knows what he's doing and has hired accordingly."
