The 54th Cannes Film Festival gets underway today with more than 20 films competing for the prestigious Palme d'Or prize.

Opening the festival is the world premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Moulin Rouge’, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

Other highlights at this year's festival include a longer, re-cut version of Francis Ford Coppola's ‘Apocalypse Now’ which will be screened 22 years after it premiered at the French Riviera resort.

Among the stars attending the Cannes festival include John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thornton, Cameron Diaz and French actress Emanuelle Beart.
