Melanie Chisholm has told the news agency Reuters that she is leaving the Spice Girls and has no intentions of doing any more work with the band. Widely considered to be the best singer in the group, Mel C confessed that she has not been comfortable being in the Spice Girls for the last two years and she just wants to do things her way and not compromise.

The Spice Girls have sold 38 million records since their debut Number One single 'Wannabe' in 1996. The five singers – Mel C, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Bechkam, Melanie Brown and Emma Bunton – also starred in the feature film 'Spiceworld' in 1997. In 1998, Geri Halliwell left the band and it was two years later before the group's third album, 'Forever', was released.

During that two-year period, the four remaining members embarked on solo projects. Mel C was the most successful with her 1999 album 'The Northern Star' selling 2.5 million copies. She is set to begin work on her second album in the early summer.
