Comhrá / Conversation 2.1

Caoimhe and Diarmuid have only been dating for a short time and are getting to know each other better.

Caoimhe:          Cé mhéad deartháir agus deirfiúr atá agat?
Diarmuid:          Tá beirt deartháireacha agam agus deirfiúr amháin. Céard fút féin?
Caoimhe:          Níl deartháir ar bith agam agus níl agam ach deirfiúr amháin, Susan.
Diarmuid:          An bhfuil sí níos sine nó níos óige ná tusa?
Caoimhe:          Tá sí níos óige – tá sí sé bliana is fiche. Cén áit a dtagann tusa sa chlann?
Diarmuid:          Is mise an dara duine is sine. Tá mo dheirfiúr níos sine – tá sí bliain is tríocha.
Tá mo chuid deartháireacha níos óige.
Caoimhe:          Cén t-ainm atá ar do dheirfiúr?
Diarmuid:          Niamh. Tá sí ina cónaí i Londain anois le cúig bliana anuas. Ba bhreá liom bualadh
                         le Susan.
Caoimhe:          Tá sí san Astráil faoi láthair ach beidh sí sa bhaile ar feadh coicíse ag an Nollaig.

Aistriúchán / Translation
Caoimhe:          How many brothers and sisters do you have?
Diarmuid:          I have two brothers and one sister. What about you?
Caoimhe:          I have no brothers and I only have one sister, Susan.
Diarmuid:          Is she older or younger than you?
Caoimhe:          She’s younger – she’s twenty-six years old. Where do you come in the family?
Diarmuid:          I’m the second oldest. My sister is older – she’s thirty-one years old. My brothers are
                         younger.
Caoimhe:          What’s your sister’s name?
Diarmuid:          Niamh. She’s been living in London now for the past five years. I’d love to meet Susan.
Caoimhe:          She’s in Australia at the moment but she’ll be home for a fortnight at Christmas.

Comhrá / Conversation 2.2

Caoimhe wants to find out more about Diarmuid's family.

Caoimhe:          Cén aois atá do dheartháireacha?
Diarmuid:          Tá Cóilín cúig bliana is fiche, tá Micheál trí bliana is fiche agus níl Colm ach naoi
                         mbliana déag.
Caoimhe:          Agus cé mhéad duine acu atá pósta?
Diarmuid:          Tá Cóilín pósta agus tá Micheál geallta. Beidh sé ag pósadh ar an mbliain seo
                        chugainn. An bhfuil Susan pósta?
Caoimhe:          Phós sí agus í an-óg, naoi mbliana déag, ach tá sí scartha anois le trí bliana anuas.
Diarmuid:          Is mór an trua sin. An bhfuil sí ag siúl amach le duine ar bith anois?
Caoimhe:          Tá. Tá sí siúl amach le fear as Melbourne. Tá siad ina gcónaí le chéile le cúpla mí
                        anuas.
Diarmuid:          An bhfuil sí chomh dathúil leatsa?
Caoimhe:          Nach tú atá fiosrach!

Aistriúchán/Translation

Caoimhe:          What age are your brothers?
Diarmuid:          Cóilín is twenty-five years old, Micheál is twenty-three years old and Colm is only
                         nineteen years old.
Caoimhe:          And how many of them are married?
Diarmuid:          Cóilín is married and Micheál is engaged. He’ll be marrying next year. Is Susan
                         married?
Caoimhe:          She married when she was very young, nineteen years old, but she has been separated
now for the past three years.
Diarmuid:          That’s a pity. Is she going out with anyone now?
Caoimhe:          Yes. She’s going out with a man from Melbourne. They’ve been living together for the
                        past few months.
Diarmuid:          Is she as good-looking as you are?
Caoimhe:          Aren’t you very nosey!

Comhrá / Conversation 2.3

Breandán and Ferdia are meeting for the first time in over twenty years.

Breandán:         Cé mhéad bliain atá tú pósta anois?
Ferdia:              Le beagnach cúig bliana déag.
Breandán:         Sin tamall maith. An bhfuil clann agat?
Ferdia:              Tá, mac amháin agus beirt iníonacha. An bhfuil clann agat féin?
Breandán:         Tá cailín amháin agam, sin an méid. Tá sí dhá bhliain déag. Cén aois atá do pháistí
                         féin?
Ferdia:              Tá Stephen deich mbliana agus tá Julie dhá bhliain déag. Is í Eibhlín an duine is sine –
                         tá sise sé bliana déag.
Breandán:         Tá sí fós sa mheánscoil, mar sin. Ferdia: Tá. Tá an bheirt eile fós sa bhunscoil.
Breandán:         Tá m’iníon féin ag dul chun na meánscoile i mbliana. Ferdia: Ní bhíonn na blianta
                         i bhfad ag imeacht!

Aistriúchán / Translation
Breandán:         How many years are you married now?
Ferdia:              For nearly fifteen years.
Breandán:         That’s a long time. Do you have children?
Ferdia:              Yes, one son and two daughters. Do you have children yourself?
Breandán:         I have one girl, that’s all. She’s twelve years old. What age are your own children?
Ferdia:              Stephen is ten years old and Julie is twelve years old. Eibhlín is the eldest – she’s
                        sixteen years old.
Breandán:         She’s still in secondary school, then.
Ferdia:              Yes. The other two are still in primary school.
