Woman Awarded £150 Damages for Breach of Promise to Marry

James McCormack, a farmer from Ballymahon, Co Longford, was awarded £75 damages, and his daughter, Catherine, damages of £150 against Thomas Kilmurry. The damages were awarded for breach of a promise to marry. It was revealed in court that Kilmurry had returned from America with a large cash sum, and had begun courting Miss McCormack. Kilmurry suggested marriage and encouraged her to convince her father to sell his farm to him. Subsequently he took her away from her family to Dublin, but she was located by a relative. It appears that once Kilmurry had secured ownership of a neighbouring farm, he reneged on his offer of marriage, and the matter was pursued by the McCormacks in court.
