Fierce fighting in Alsace and Lorraine

Published: 24 August 1914

There have been reports today of fierce fighting in Alsace and Lorraine. The French were successful in Alsace but in Lorraine they suffered a reverse.

The French troops having advanced into Lorraine along the whole front from Chateau Salins and having driven back the German troops into the Valley of Seille and marshy district, advanced guards entered the area. Several German army corps delivered a vigorous counter attack. The French advance guards fell back on the main body and extremely sharp fighting ensued.

The French troops, who had been fighting for six days were withdrawn.
