Volcanic eruption kills 500

Published: 28 December 1913

A volcanic eruption which shook the Ambrym Islands was described as the most violent shock that has been experienced for a century. It is estimated that at least 500 natives have been killed.

The volcano erupted on 3 December, devastating the entire village and plantation and transforming the whole face of the island. Witnesses state that the eruption was so bad they expected the entire island to disappear.

Rescue attempts were made by trying to get people to a boat and bring them to a neighbouring island but the water for miles was too hot to touch and both the rescuers and rescued were enveloped in ashes, steam and smoke.

The island is well-known for its highly active volcanic activity.
