Typhus and Typhoid Outbreak in Lettermore District
PJ O’Malley, the Chairman of the Oughterard District Council, has written to the Irish Independent outlining the typhus and typhoid outbreak in the area. He notes that the disease is spread across the region, and that the illness has been ongoing for eight months. It is his view that without outside help the suffering and loss over the coming summer will be simply appalling. He concludes by stating that while ‘the Government sends thousands of pounds to develop the wild savages of the Congo, it lets the Irish peasant perish of neglect at its door’.
