The toll of the Balkan War

Published: 9 August 1913

Estimates have been released relating to the number of deaths caused by the conflict in the Balkans. The dispute, which is less than a year old, has led to the deaths of 100,000 Turks, 140,000 Bulgarians, 70,000 Serbs and 40,000 Greeks. This total of 350,000 dead can be placed in a horrifying context by recalling that the two and a half year Boer War led to British loses of only 20,000.
