Stormy weather in Belfast

Published: 18 November 1913

A gale of extreme severity passed over Belfast today causing considerable damage.

One of the large cantilever cranes at the Workman, Clark and Company ship yards was blown over by the winds, and crashed into the harbour waters. Fortunately the incident happened at lunchtime when most of the men who would have been working in the area were on their break, and no one was injured.

The twisted metal wreckage of the crane is now causing an obstruction in the harbour, and is causing disruption to work in the shipyards and to water traffic.
