Roadside squabble leads to murder

Published: 10 October 1913

Peter and Patrick Lalor appeared in court in Kilkenny today charged with murdering John Joseph Byrne. The deceased had gone to a bar in Ballacolla with his friend Patrick Fennelly, who appeared as a witness. Fennelly deposed that he and Byrne had left the bar at 8pm, but had been followed by the Lalor brothers. It seems that Byrne owed Peter Lalor one shilling and six pence. The debt become the subject of an intense discussion that led, according to the witness, to Byrne being thrown to the ground, kicked and pushed down into a ditch by the two brothers. Fennelly further stated that Byrne had given the accused no provocation for the assault.

They were remanded until next week when they will appear again in court.
