Germany declare war on Russia

Published: 1 August 1914

Germany has declared war on Russia. The news of the declaration was received with enthusiastic rejoicings in Berlin and across Germany.

The Emperor, who was received with storms of cheers, declared that the sword had been forced into their hand. He said, ‘when war comes, all party strife would cease, as they would all be German brothers, and nothing more.’

The staff of the German Embassy in St Petersburg left today and the Kaiser has ordered the mobilisation of the entire forces of his Empire.
