Chicken Causes Serious Accident

Published: 7 July 1913

Maurice Kearney, 19, suffered a head injury while taking part in the Navan Sports Day. The bicycle race in which he was involved was taking place on roads around the town. Shortly after leaving the centre of town, Kearney was thrown from his bicycle and his head struck a kerbstone. It appears that the accident was caused when Kearney tried to avoid a chicken that was crossing the road. He was taken to the County Meath Infirmary where it was discovered he was suffering from concussion. The chicken was unhurt in the incident.
