Captain Who Rescued Fenian Prisoners From Australia Dies

Captain George Anthony has died. In 1876 the Captain had been in command of the whaling ship, the Catalpa, when it was used in the rescue of six Fenians from their imprisonment at Fremantle, Australia. Captain Anthony was heralded as a hero by the rescued Fenians because when the ship was stopped and challenged by the British ship, the Georgette, he dared the commander of the British vessel to fire on the American flag of the Catalpa. The British did not want to risk a diplomatic incident, and the Catalpa was able to sail onto New York.
