Brackenstown House destroyed by fire

Published: 23 November 1913

Brackenstown House, which is in Swords, and comprises 25 rooms, was completely gutted by fire today. The fire was spotted early this morning, and the fire brigade were quickly dispatched. Despite their best efforts, however, they could not prevent the fire from spreading.

The current owner, Captain O’Callaghan was famed for his hospitality at the house, particularly during the Horse Show week. The house was originally the home of Chief Baron Bysse, and it is recorded that Oliver Cromwell stayed in the house during his Irish campaign. It is not known what caused the fire, and police are investigating.
