Hen shoots farmer in Monaghan

Published: 7 March 1914

A farmer has died following a bizarre shooting incident at a farmhouse between Ballybay and Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan.

The farmer, Laurence Connolly, was taking out his gun to shoot magpies that had been taking eggs from the hen roosts when a hen ran across him. The gun struck the hen and discharged itself into the body of Mr. Connolly. He died several hours later.

Mr. Connolly had amassed considerable wealth in his youth in America. He married following his return to Ireland but his new wife died suddenly shortly afterwards.

He subsequently lived with his brother and it was at their farm that the incident occurred.
