Cat used as scarecrow

A Cavan man has been convicted of gross cruelty to a cat. John J. McCollum was before Cavan Petty Sessions, which heard that a cat had been found in a turnip field with a chain around its neck and a horse’s bit at the end. The cat was exhausted and could not move. Police were told that the cat was in the field to scare off birds.

Mr. McCollum was fined 20s. and costs and was told by magistrates that it was ‘the most outrageous piece of cruelty’ ever witnessed.
