Mobile recycling campaign to aid meningitis research

Irish-owned home media and IT retailer Click.ie and BPI Telecom have teamed up to raise funds for Meningitis Research Foundation with their Laptops for Schools campaign which was launched by Miriam O'Callaghan of RTÉ.

As part of the campaign primary schools who collect and donate 100 old mobile phones for recycling will benefit from a free laptop and other much needed school supplies.

"The current financial climate means that schools are under increasingly severe budgetary pressure," commented Maurice Muldoon, managing director, Click.ie. "This is a great way for pupils to benefit from new resources while supporting this worthy cause."

Meningitis Research Foundation has estimated that two deaths occur each month as a result of meningitis and septicaemia. There are approximately 250-300 incidences of the disease each year in Ireland, the majority of which will affect under fives.

The Laptops for Schools campaign is part of a programme organised by BPI Telecom which hopes to raise up to €1m for Meningitis Research Foundation by requesting the public to donate old mobile phones.

"We are delighted to be working with Click.ie in support of preventative research into this devastating disease," said Fergus Sweeney, managing director, BPI Telecom.
