Manufacturing, once the backbone of the economy, has taken a big hit in the current recession, and small and medium-sized enterprises often bear the brunt of the downturn.

Last year 19,000 jobs were lost in manufacturing. From January to May this year, more than 7,700 manufacturing jobs were lost - up 139% on the same period last year.

Keenan exports 85% of its products and employs 50 people selling in Europe, Australia and South Africa.
