US pharmaceutical company Merck is to set up a new facility in Carlow town, in a €200m investment backed by IDA Ireland. The new plant will create 170 new jobs by 2011.
It will be located at the IDA Business and Technology Park, which the US company has bought.
The project will be involved in human vaccines and will employ workers in quality control, production, engineering, research and administration.
Merck will also be seeking to collaborate with Irish academic institutions in similar areas.
Merck already employs 460 people in Tipperary and Dublin.
