British Gas came under further pressure to cut prices today after it revealed its residential business made profits of £533m in the first half of the year.
The profits boost, compared with a £143m loss in 2006, came from higher margins before British Gas passed on lower wholesale gas costs to customers with two price cuts earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Centrica, which owns British Gas, said yesterday it is to pay over €60m for a share in one of Airtricity's Scottish ventures.
Airtricity said that Centrica has bought a 50% share in its electricity wind farm in the Braes of Doune in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
It is understood that the British company is paying about €65m for the stake.
