ISEQ closes at fresh high of 6552

Dublin's ISEQ index hit another record closing high today, as it gained 53 points to close at 6,552. On Monday, the index had closed at its highest ever level just below 6,500.

Today's gains were again driven by higher banking shares, including AIB and Anglo Irish Bank. Shares in construction and building related companies were also higher.

The Dublin market had gained about 5% since the start of the year, compared with a flat performance in Europe and a fall of almost 3% in the US markets.

Last year the ISEQ gained 26%, though a dramatic recovery in Elan shares was a major factor. Even without Elan, however, the ISEQ gained around 15% last year.
