30 new jobs in online teaching centre
Monday, 28 June 2004The ECC Foreign Language Institute Japan is establishing its first web learning centre outside of Japan at Harcourt Street in Dublin, with the support of IDA Ireland.
ECC will provide live online interactive English language learning services to customers in Japan via the web. The centre will provide 30 new high quality jobs over the next five years for native English speaking graduates.
The centre went live on June 1 with a number of tutors already employed. Recruitment is continuing.
ECC provides English language teaching services to the Japanese market and is different from its competitors in that it uses broadband technology to provide its service. Students attend tutorials from their home using web conferencing technology.
ECC was established in Osaka in Japan in 1962. With English language training as its core activity it also has an education publications division, computer science and business schools and a distance learning initiative.
'The operating costs in Ireland in terms of telecommunications, property and payroll make Dublin an ideal location for this centre and will make it a more cost effective operation than establishing a similar further centre in Japan,' the company said.
The time difference between Ireland and Japan will also provide a double benefit. Because the majority of web tutorials in Japan take place in the evening and at night, the Dublin centre will be cost effective as it will eliminate the need for the payment of shift bonuses.
Secondly, ECC will be able to extend the hours of web lessons to 2am Japanese time, giving the company a competitive advantage.
