Telia, Sonera confirm merger talks

Swedish semi-public telecommunications operator Telia has confirmed that it is in merger talks with Finland's state-controlled rival Sonera. Sonera also confirmed the talks.

The announcements came after a radio interview with Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen at the weekend in which he said the two companies had resumed merger talks.

Sonera is 52.8% owned by the Finnish state. Rumours have circulated on the Nordic market for more than a year that Telia, which has been selling off its non-core activities, has done so in order to pay for the acquisition of either Sonera or TDC of Denmark, part of its strategy to increase its dominance on the Nordic market.
