Second jobs blow for Flextronics

The Flextronics company based at the Plassey Technological Park in Limerick is to seek 130 redundancies from its workforce of 500 and a further 40 redundancies among its contract workers. It is understood the redundancies are to be voluntary.

Flextronics is involved in supplying networking products to the telecommunications and IT sectors.

There has been a downturn in customer demand in recent months, particularly in the telecommunications market, which is being blamed for the job cuts in this sector.

This is the second blow to Flextronics, which recently announced it was closing its plant at Tullamore with the loss of over 300 jobs. It lost a major contract with the computer firm Dell, which resulted in the job losses there.

The company also has plants at Shannon and Cork, which are not affected by today's announcement.
