British Midland to cut 600 jobs

listen

Hundreds more jobs were lost today in the aviation industry in the aftermath of the US terrorist attacks.

Airline BMI British Midland, which operates services on the Dublin-Heathrow and Dublin-East Midlands routes, is planning to cut 600 jobs - over 10% of its entire workforce. The company was also grounding eight aircraft.,

Today's move comes after airlines around the world have encountered turbulence amid a global economic slowdown aggravated by last month's attacks on New York and Washington.

Rival British carriers BA and Virgin Atlantic have already axed 7,000 and 1,200 jobs, respectively, and trimmed capacity, while US carriers have made even deeper cutbacks.
