Britain's electricity grid could be linked to Ireland
Friday, 20 July 2001Britain's electricity grid could be linked to Ireland, Norway and the Netherlands if plans to build undersea cables go ahead.
National Grid Group, the operator of the grid in England and Wales, is currently deciding whether to build undersea electricity cables with Norway and Holland.
The feasability study for an interconnector between Ireland and the UK is still ongoing, according to Stewart Larque, a spokesman for National Grid.
The interconnector link would be between Wales and Ireland. The UK grid already has a link with the French grid and was recently connected to the Isle of Man.
The links are part of the European Commission's programme to create a single European energy market and were initially proposed by the Commission, which financed up to 50% of the feasability studies.
Studies for undersea cables are estimated to cost in the region of 5m euros, according to figures from the Commission services.
