Retail sales up 5.3% in February

The value of retail sales rose by 5.3% in February from the previous month, according to the latest provisional figures from the Central Statistics Office today.

The value of retail sales increased by 8.4% year-on-year, the provisional figures showed.

The CSO revised the provisional year-on-year figure for January to show an increase of 2.8% - down from a 3.1% rise. But it left the month-on-month value for January unchanged - this had showed a fall of 4.7%.

Annual sales growth has fallen back from a 16.2% peak in December 1999 as the effects of the international slowdown has impacted on the country's economy.
