January sales figure lowest since 1995

The value of retail sales rose by 3.1% in January compared with the same month last year, according to preliminary figures from the Central Statistics Office. The annual figure was 6% when motor trades were excluded. The 3.1% rise is the lowest since 1995.

Retail sales were down 4.7%, however, when compared with December 2001, which was a strong spending month. The three-month November to January figure showed a 1.2% increase compared with the previous three months.

Final figures for December 2001 show a monthly rise of 2.2% and an annual increase of 12.3%. For 2001 as a whole, retail sales grew by 5.9%, following a 16.3% rise in 2000.
